Spring Pet Care

(04/23/2013) Brent Wilson

Ah, spring is here! The flowers are blooming and the weather is warming.  It is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in Vegas. Unfortunately for our pets they sometimes do not get so excited about the warming of the weather, especially our furry friends! There are pre-cautions cat and dog owners can take to prepare for spring and summer weather. One of the most efficient ways to keep your pet nice and cool is a haircut or shave, depending on their style! It is important to maintain grooming during this time of the year in order for your pet to remain comfortable in their own fur so to speak. Another extremely effective way to keep your dog cool during the spring and summer is to keep them at a good weight. When a dog or cat is overweight it can seriously add problems to their mobility and add extra insolation where it is not needed. Not only is this going to keep your buddy cool, there are many other long term issues that can come up with overweight pets so be sure to keep them trim!

We all love to spend time in the outdoors during the spring right? Who better to take on a hike than your most devoted furry pal? No one! This is another area where dog owners especially need to be careful. If you are the outdoors type and like bringing the dogs along, it is extremely important for them to updated on their shots (as with all pets), but there are also specific medications for dogs that will spending a lot of time outdoors, especially hiking.  One of these is called the rattlesnake vaccination. Although rare, it is an extremely dangerous situation if your dog gets bit by a rattlesnake, it can even deadly. We offer a rattlesnake vaccination upon request for anyone who feels their dog will be in situations where a bite is a possibility.

Our main goal is to keep our pets healthy, happy, and comfortable correct? What could be more uncomfortable than tiny insects crawling in your skin? Gross isn’t it? Unfortunately this is also something we have to deal with when taking care of our pets. This time of the year is when they like to come out and disrupt or buddy’s day. For people who spend time out of the Las Vegas valley, we have information about the necessary flea and tick medications. Other simple ways to keep your pets comfortable are regular maintenance on baths, clipping, dentals, and regular exams.  We are always here for you and look forward to seeing you this spring!
